Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABP) is a test that takes numerous readings of your blood pressure over a 24-hour period. It provides accurate and reliable information and can give you and your doctor a truer picture of your blood pressure than the occasional visits and readings taken at your doctor's office. Many patients develop a so called "white coat syndrome" while visiting the doctor's office. This can cause blood pressure readings to be falsely elevated. With this test, you and your doctor have solid information to rely on when considering treatment options.
Symptoms
Occasional high or low blood pressure, headaches, dizziness, nausea, tinnitus (ear noise), etc. This test is very useful when evaluating the nature of the hypertension and choosing the appropriate treatment. It is also useful in monitoring the action of anti-hypertensive medications while you take them.
Preparation for Procedure
No special preparation is required. Just make sure that you take a shower before you come to the clinic. This test is not covered by OHIP and you don’t need a referral letter from the doctor. It will cost you $ 75 (cash or personal check only). Do not forget to bring your health card and a list of medications with you.
Procedure
The monitor is a small device worn in a pouch that has a blood pressure cuff attached to it. Our technologist will fit the cuff on your arm. It inflates and deflates automatically throughout the 24-hour period when it is worn. Usually, your heart rate and blood pressure will be measured every 30 minutes during the day time and every hour at night. Please follow the instructions:
The beep signals a measurement. Keep still during measurements until the process is complete. Let your arm hang loosely or, when sitting, let the lower arm rest on the table or on support. Avoid moving your hand during the measurement.
The DAY/NIGHT key should be pressed immediately before going to sleep and upon waking.
Most people find them very easy to wear. You will need to return to the clinic the next day to have the machine removed.
